Governor Mike DeWine shared a message of gratitude and support to Ohio's direct support professionals (DSPs), who support people with developmental disabilities, during his March 17 press conference addressing coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) understands the unique role that service providers and DSPs play to ensure the health and safety of Ohioans with disabilities and is thankful for their dedication during this state of emergency.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Statement & Resources

3/14/2020

Comments

CRSI Staff, Partners & Community Members,

We have been monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic closely, and today I would like to update you regarding our actions. First, I would like to personally assure you our top priority is the health, safety and well-being of the individuals we serve, as well as our employees, families and neighbors. I would also like to assure you we will maintain the highest level of service to each resident we serve.

Per the orders from the Governor's office, no visitors will be permitted at our ICFs (Intermediate Care Facilities) in order to minimize the spread of the virus within our facilities. Please be patient and understand that things will be subject to change quickly as we continue to receive updates and directives. We realize this rapidly evolving situation is creating unique hardships for all of us; however, it is our responsibility to minimize the long-term impact and implications to those we serve. Based on current information, our population is one of the most vulnerable, and we would like to minimize their risk to the best of our ability.

At this time, we have asked our employees to stay home if they are showing any signs or symptoms of illness OR have been in close contact with an individual that has tested positive for COVID-19. We have limited our in-person meetings and are using video conferencing and conference calls whenever possible.

To further minimize the risks to the individuals we serve we are implementing the following precautions:
  • No employees are permitted to receive visitors at/in work or service locations.
  • Community experiences should be limited to those essential for employment, health, welfare, and emergent situations. NOTE: Special caution should be taken for community experiences that involve contact with large groups of people per the Governor’s direction.
  • Medical appointments may be completed for essential medical reasons only. Routine appointments may be rescheduled until after extra precautions are not considered emergent and necessary.
  • All tours, provider interviews, and intakes have been postponed.
  • All locations will clean their work areas and location surfaces at least once per day with disinfectant including all doorknobs, door openers, light switches, etc. Avoid touching surfaces when possible.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support.

Scott DeLong
President

The federal government would track the number of direct support professionals for the first time ever under a new proposal designed to help address a shortage of workers to assist people with disabilities.

A bipartisan bill introduced in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives on Monday would change the way that the government categorizes direct support professionals.

Currently, these workers are lumped in with home health care aides in the system used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to monitor workforce trends. Advocates say that category is far too broad and leads to a lack of reliable information about how many people across the nation are employed as direct support professionals and where more are needed.
