‘Stomp Out a Blue Christmas’
Champaign Co.: Co-sponsors CRSI and the Mechanicsburg Eagles hosted a “Blue Christmas Festival” on October 10 at the Mechanicsburg Eagles Lodge, benefiting the annual Children’s Christmas Fund conducted by the Champaign County Sheriff’s office and FOP Lodge #346.
The program entitled Operation Stomp Out a Blue Christmas was started a year ago by deputies representing the local FOP Lodge to provide Christmas for less fortunate children in Champaign County.
“Every day our deputies come into contact with people in the community who are struggling during these difficult economic times”, says Sheriff Matt Melvin. “Christmas is a time for celebration but some families are struggling just to put food on the table, let alone provide presents for their children. That is why we can make a difference…as public servants.”
A list of families will be provided by the Sheriff’s Department; and members of the Mechanicsburg Eagles and CRSI employees have volunteered to wrap presents.
Toys will be purchased with proceeds from the festival and new, unwrapped toys can be donated by dropping them in a donation barrel located at CRSI, 1150 Scioto St. in Urbana. Barrels are also located at the Sheriff’s office on Miami Street or at the Mechanicsburg Eagles Lodge.
A day will be set aside in December when deputies along with Santa Claus will deliver the presents to each family.
‘We are proud of this partnership with the Sheriff’s Department, FOP Lodge #346 and the Mechanicsburg Eagles on behalf of families in need; and we have extended our services to the community by including an additional drop-off point at CRSI for canned goods that will be donated to the Caring Kitchen in Urbana,” says DeLong.
